Amateur Radio Emergency Service Activity Day

Saturday April 26th, 2014 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Location

Pasadena Huntington Memorial Hospital

Pasadena, California

West Tower

Conference Room 5 and 6

The next Activity day will be April 26th from 9AM-1PM.  Bring a friend. Everyone is welcome!  We will learn about using the HF bands for emergency communications  — How to send that email message to anyone you want when all other services are out – internet, power, etc. We will also talk about and build a couple of antennas – a 20 meter dipole and NVIS which stands for Near Vertical Incidence Skywave, but all you need to know is that NVIS applies to local HF communications to about 250-300 miles out in a radius and easy to deploy. You will also learn about soldering. Building these antennas require soldering. You learned how to make powerpoles at the last activity day so we will build off of that. We will have limited supplies on hand for you to purchase an antenna should you wish to take one home. We will not have supplies for everyone to do this, but the good news is that you will have all the information to easily construct one on your own.

Amateur Radio Emergency Service Activity Day

Saturday March 29, 2014 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Location

Pasadena Huntington Memorial Hospital

Pasadena, California

West Tower

Conference Room 5 and 6

We will have two hands-on workshops; Programming your Radio and Building your “Go Box” — Be sure to bring your radios! You’ll learn about local repeater access, frequency shifts/offsets, using PL tones as well as discussions about how to program your radio manually and by use of a computer. If you are having any technical issues with your radios or just have general questions, we will address them there.

We will also talk about Go Boxes – the importance and practicality of them, what goes in them and how it all comes together. After talking about it, we will actually build a Go Box from the ground up including all components, power backups, etc. If you’ve ever considered or thought about putting one together, but weren’t really sure where to begin, this will be a great workshop.
